Alternatives to Kindle and Apple Books
Keep your own ebook library, in files you control.
Buying books from a store that can change or end the deal at any time makes your shelf a rental. Calibre keeps your library on your own computer, converts between formats and sends books to your reader.
It is a shelf you own, with no store attached.
The tools
A benchmark review of the biggest tool in this category is on its way, so you can see what these are measured against.
How to choose
Look at where your books are stored and whether you could read them if the store disappeared. A folder of open files is the safe answer. Then check that your reader can read what you keep, since some devices only take certain formats.
