Hermes Agent comes from Nous Research, a start-up founded in 2023 that also releases open AI models. The agent runs in a terminal or through messaging apps such as Telegram, Signal and Slack, writes reusable skills from the tasks it completes and remembers what it learns about you across sessions. The code is MIT licensed, it works with Nous's own models, OpenRouter, OpenAI or any endpoint you choose, and it can run on a laptop, a cheap server or in a container.
Nous is also a venture-backed company, reported this autumn to be raising $90 million at a $1.5 billion valuation, and it sells optional model plans from $20 to $200 a month. The licence means the community could keep the software going whatever the company does, which helps Longevity, but the growth plans pull on Power, and that is why it sits in the Large band. Like any agent with your logins and a shell, it asks for care, and its documentation lists approvals, pairing and container isolation as safeguards.
