Serif made Affinity, and Canva bought Serif in March 2024. In October 2025 it released version 3, one app that combines the earlier Designer, Photo and Publisher apps and is available at no charge, and it withdrew the old paid apps from sale. The Canva AI features inside it, such as generative fill, need a Canva Pro subscription.
It is a polished and capable Adobe alternative, and the free price is a real draw. It is also closed software owned by a company whose main business is a subscription platform, and version 2 stopped being actively maintained within a year, though existing licences still work. The ownership is the reason it scores below the open tools. The download buttons on its site go through a Canva sign-in, so expect to need a Canva account.

This badge reports a dated review. It is not a certification and it costs nothing. Link it to this page and leave the numbers alone: the image always shows the current score.

For comparison, we also reviewed Adobe Creative Cloud (12/30) as a benchmark.
