Alternatives to Adobe Creative Cloud
Draw, lay out, edit and render without a subscription, in tools that keep your files open.
Creative Cloud is rented software. Stop paying and your files still exist, but the programs that open them are gone, and the formats are built around Adobe's apps. Designers feel this most, because a project can outlive the licence it started under.
The open field is stronger than it used to be. Inkscape covers vector work, GIMP and Krita cover photos and painting, darktable handles RAW, Blender covers 3D, Kdenlive covers video, and Penpot is an interface design tool that works in the browser. A newer group uses AI: ComfyUI runs image models on your own machine, and ArtCraft is an open-source studio for composing AI images and video. Affinity is the one commercial option here, free to use but owned by Canva.
Think of the six questions as a heuristic evaluation of the tool itself. Lock-in asks whether the file is a door you can walk through or a wall, and Self-direction asks whether the interface teaches you or nags you.

The highlighted row is the giant these tools are measured against. Read the full Adobe Creative Cloud review. It sits outside the directory, and you can see more on the benchmarks page.
How to choose
Start with the file format, since that decides whether your work survives the tool. Then ask who pays for it and what happens if they stop. The free tools have steeper learning curves than Adobe's, so budget time to learn them. For AI tools, check which models run on your own machine and which send your work to a service.
