Standard Ebooks is a volunteer project that takes public-domain books and gives them the care a good publisher would, with proper typography, clean formatting and covers. Everything it produces is dedicated to the public domain, so you can copy, share and keep the files without asking anyone. It is paid for by reader donations, with a few sponsors listed on its site.
The limit is the shelf: you will find the classics, and nothing recent. It is the best answer to the Kindle store's free-classics section, because the files are yours, in standard formats, and look better than most paid editions. Check which file type your reader needs before you download.
- Public-domain books made with proper typography and clean formatting
- Dedicated to the public domain, so you can copy and share freely
- Paid for by reader donations, but only the classics

This badge reports a dated review. It is not a certification and it costs nothing. Link it to this page and leave the numbers alone: the image always shows the current score.
For dark backgrounds, use standard-ebooks-dark.svg in place of standard-ebooks-light.svg.
For comparison, we also reviewed Amazon Kindle (13/30) as a benchmark.
