Tuta, formerly Tutanota, is an encrypted email, calendar and contacts service from Germany, started in 2011 by Arne Möhle and Matthias Pfau. It says it encrypts your data end to end, including with post-quantum cryptography, and that its mail will be free forever and ad-free. All its clients are open source and can be audited, and paid plans add things like custom domains and aliases.

It is a good private home for mail, with the calendar included. As far as we know it does not support IMAP, so ordinary mail apps cannot connect to it, and moving in or out takes some effort. We could not confirm how the company is funded.
