Nextcloud does what Google Drive does, syncing files across devices and sharing them by link, except the server can be yours or one run by a host you pick. The software is open source, and your files stay ordinary files you can move elsewhere.

The catch is upkeep. Running it yourself means updates and backups are your job, and a hosted plan trades that for a bill. The apps lean toward doing everything, so we scored Delivery a 3. Scores are our reading of its public pages, and we have not run it for months.

    What stands out

  • Syncs and shares files like Google Drive, from a server you control
  • Open source, with hosting from many providers or from yourself
  • Does a lot, so the setup and upkeep take real effort

This badge reports a dated review. It is not a certification and it costs nothing. Link it to this page and leave the numbers alone: the image always shows the current score.

For dark backgrounds, use nextcloud-dark.svg in place of nextcloud-light.svg.

For comparison, we also reviewed Google Drive (15/30) as a benchmark.
