ChatGPT
The assistant that made generative AI mainstream, and a closed service all the way down.
Benchmark review. Giants are reviewed rarely, to show what the tools in the directory are measured against. This one is not listed in the directory, and it is an example, not a recommendation. Scores are our opinion on the six questions, based on public sources and dated October 2026.
ChatGPT does an enormous range of things well, from drafting to coding to answering questions, which earns it a 4 on Delivery. It is also a hosted service that runs entirely on OpenAI's servers, so you need an account, a connection and OpenAI's continued goodwill, and you cannot run it yourself.
OpenAI's help pages say that for Free, Plus and Pro users it may use your content to train its models, with an opt-out in the settings. Thumbs up and thumbs down feedback can send the whole conversation into training even after you opt out, and temporary chats are exempt while they stay temporary. The agent features it sells act through your accounts, so using them means trusting one company with a great deal. Compare it with the assistants you can run yourself.
- Does a huge range of tasks well
- A closed hosted service you can't run yourself
- May train on your content unless you opt out
