Where a huge number of people share photos and short video, paid for by advertising.
Benchmark review. Giants are reviewed rarely, to show what the tools in the directory are measured against. This one is not listed in the directory, and it is an example, not a recommendation. Scores are our opinion on the six questions, based on public sources and dated October 2026.
Instagram is free because advertising pays for it, and eMarketer projected that it would account for 50.3% of Meta's US ad revenue in 2025, about $32 billion. The feed leans on infinite scroll, autoplay, notifications and recommendations based on what you did before, which is the mix our Self-direction question is about. It does connect people and works on nearly any phone, which is why Delivery is a 2 and not lower.
US states are suing Meta, and a federal trial over whether these features were built to hook children was under way in August, with no verdict reported. Meta denies it and points to its Teen Accounts. Those are allegations, and we left them out of the score, which rests on the design and the business model as they stand today. We have not checked how much of your data you can take with you, so Lock-in is our estimate. As of October 2026 this is our opinion, based on the public sources named here, and if you spot an error, write to hello@toolsforconviviality.com and we will check it and correct it. Compare it with the tools in Social feeds.
- Paid for by advertising, projected at about half of Meta's US ad revenue by eMarketer
- Infinite scroll, autoplay, notifications and recommendations shape the feed
- The legal cases are allegations and are not part of the score
